Resin casting, steel, wood
Height: 22 inches/ 55.8 cm

Interpreted as an allegorical figure inspired by the tale of Icarus and Daedalus; We all strive to fly in our own ways and occasionally we fall. This piece to me is more about the human spirit and what happens after the fall; we crawl, climb, and fly again. The torso originally modeled in clay was cast in resin, the wings are hand-cut welded steel, and the base is Maple wood.

Why only a torso? Classical torsos continue to be cherished. These anonymous forms date back to the beginning of Western culture. Greek and Roman sculptures were often ravaged by war and decline, smashed and cast aside by marauders, later unearthed and studied by scholars and artists. The ideal torso is universal; it’s all of us. It can represent the center of raw human emotion, or simply express the gracefulness of a pose. From the 14th century to the present day, artists and art lovers alike have been drawn to the timeless beauty of a well-sculpted torso.
